Exchanging Money and Sweaty Ladies Twerking

Saturday was insane in La Habana. I woke up early to exchange money at the bank, early being 9am. Inside the air conditioned bank there were about 20 people sitting down waiting for their turn. You call out,”la última” meaning the last and whoever is last inline let’s you know. Then you don’t actually wait behind that person, you just sit down and remember who you were after.

While I was exchanging money I had to fill out a form with my name, country of origin and such. You can’t make any mistakes on the form though. If you make one mistake you have to start all over. I had to start over three times.

There was a street fair which they call a, feria. It was the weirdest street fair I had ever seen. They were selling raw meat, cans of food and used clothing. You couldn’t look through the used clothing or touch it. You had to tell the person behind the booth which item you wanted. They also has bands and street performances.

That night I went to a club in the Vedado neighborhood called La Gruta. It was the strangest place I’ve ever been. After entering you walk down a flight of stairs into a large dark room with no air conditioning and there are about 50 women twerking solo. It’s like a hot sweaty room full of twerking women.

It’s definitely a sight to see and for only $5 CUC on a Saturday night I would say it’s worth it if you don’t mind sweating profusely. It’s located on Avenida 23 (the main drag in Vedado) between Calles N and O, close to the Malecón.

After you’ve had all the sweating and twerking you can handle head to the Malecon. It’s always filled with 1000s of people on a Friday or Saturday night until the wee hours of the morning.
